THE EASTERN STAR GALLERY MAY 06 - MAY 10, 2019 LOS ANGELES, CA 90049 ARTIST STATEMENT:
According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, nostalgia is “wistful or excessively sentimental yearning for a return to or of some past period or irrecoverable condition. Through my photography, I want to highlight key moments or feelings of happiness, friendship, and community that one may feel in a nostalgic state. Additionally, through my photos, I aspire to evoke these emotions and leave the audience ultimately wanting to see how our future will evolve after viewing the past. In order to focus on the nostalgic aspect of my work, I have decided to show the work that utilizes techniques that normally take the longest and most precision within the medium. 35mm Film photography requires immense focus and strategy, paralleling to how one approaches life and the importance of patience I decided to use film not only for the process of time but also for its sentimental qualities. Film was the medium of photography when my parents were growing up and now I have chosen to use it for my work in order to document life with my friends. Having nostalgia for a past that is not mine, I strive to engage the viewer with a similar experience of longing and sentimentality. I have chosen to show mostly portraits in my exhibition in order to express feelings of nostalgia through expression. Additionally, the few landscapes incorporated also resemble the sentimental aspects of my own memories, such as trips to the beach with friends in which others have similar experiences. The installation of events in my life strives to be an unpredictable source of imagination allowing each audience member to receive their own and different experience once they step foot into our transformed space. |
